Annual Accomplishments
Since incorporating in September 2003, North Capitol Main Street, Inc. has raised over $40,000 for neighborhood-based, business area improvement projects. The following is a summary of the organization's major goals and accomplishments.
- Sponsor fundraising events to finance NCMS, Inc. projects.
- Hold annual Winter Blues Silent Auction. Past Winter Blues events have each raised in excess of $13,000 per event.
- More than 250 people attended Winter Blues '06, demonstrating the wide support NCMS, Inc. has in surrounding communities.
- 2007 Winter Blues and Silent Auction was the best fundraising year ever. More local and corporate sponsors contributed to the overall success of the event.
- Sponsor commercial brokers breakfast to showcase the retail opportunities available in the NCMS, Inc. area.
- Identified and invited commercial brokers to the breakfast.
- Toured properties available with local commercial brokers.
- Initiate streetscape improvements along NCMS, Inc. area business corridors to enhance their visual appeal to potential retailers.
- Funded installation of wrought iron fencing around tree boxes on the 1800 block of First St., NW
- Funded installation of more than two dozen planters in the Bloomingdale and Eckington business districts.
- Sponsor business development events within the NCMS, Inc. service area.
- Organized grand opening celebration in support of Windows Café and Market, located in the western node of the NCMS, Inc. service area.
- Advertised and issued a press release about the grand opening celebration.
- Recognized Windows Café as the business of the year for the 2007 Winter Blues Silent Auction
- Provide interior design assistance to a local NCMS, Inc. business.
- Worked with the proprietors of the Windows Café and Market to select a contemporary and exciting color palette for the interior of the café.
- Decorated the café to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for Bloomingdale's first sit-down dining establishment.
- Commission local graphic artist to create logo for NCMS, Inc.
- Worked with the graphic artist to ensure key visual elements of the neighborhood were incorporated into the design.
- Unveiled commissioned and newly-designed logo at February 2006 Winter Blues and Silent Auction
- Establish strong working relationship between North Capitol Main Street and law enforcement agencies.
- Met with MPD officials and with U.S. Attorney's office to discuss public safety issues along North Capitol Street.
- Participate in PSA 501 meetings and 5D CAC meetings.
- Adopt and improve Truxton Park at North Capitol Street and Florida Avenue, NW. and the pocket park at North Capitol Street and Lincoln Road, NE.
- Funded installation of River Birch and Crape Myrtle trees, ground cover, and spring bulbs.
- Funded installation of wrought iron fencing.
